1. Get a PA Driver’s Manual.
2. Get a Physical – this is the ONLY thing you can do six months prior to your 16th birthday. The physical form on the first page of the PA manual must be completed by your physician.
3. Study the PA Manual so you can successfully pass the knowledge test to acquire your permit.
4. On your 16th birthday you can go take your permit test. No Appointment is necessary.
You go to the DMV at 4221 Buffalo Road. (Tuesday – Sat.) You need to take the following: Original Birth Certificate; Social Security Card; A check payable to PennDOT for $31.00; Application- with physical section completed by physician; and a parent or guardian.
5. Once at the DMV you take a Vision and Knowledge Test. You must get 15/18 correct on the computerized knowledge test. Don’t guess at a question if you have no idea what the correct answer is – “skip” it.
6. If you don’t pass – take all of your identification and paperwork and go back and try again. You can go once a day as many times as necessary with no additional charge.
7. If you Pass – Congratulations! They give you a permit and you are allowed to start driving.
